Lively Bargaining – Shopping in Egypt’s Souks

Despite massive modernization, Egypt still manages to preserve their ancient culture. Part of that culture is shopping for low-cost goods in colorful, lively souks. Souks are local open-air markets, comprising establishments that range from stores with fronts that are covered with colorful awnings to simple stalls with nothing more than a chair, a table or mat to place the merchandise on, and a large umbrella to protect the merchant from the burning sun. shopping in Egypt Historically, souks were erected outside cities, usually at places where incoming caravans would stop. Merchants would then display their merchandise. As years went by, souks then shifted inside urban centers due to the phenomenal growth and business potential of a city. Credit cards are widely accepted and ATM machines are ubiquitous in most cities and towns. There is generally a better exchange rate once inside the country, so it is a good idea to take your domestic currency with you and then exchange it once you touch down in Egypt. Should you run out of money for any reason, there are also Western Union branches throughout the country, just in case of emergency! Local Egyptian culture Egypt is a country, and so there are a few cultural differences, but nothing that cannot be easily remedied. Kissing in public is frowned upon, as is wearing revealing clothing away from the beach. The country is very conservative socially, so, as with any country, do pay some consideration to the cultural norms of the locals. Bargaining is a local custom, so do not be alarmed if the first price offer...

Where to go in Egypt

Cairo is perhaps best known for the river Nile which rules through it, don’t be in de Nile! However, the intricacies of its city walls provide for much that a tourist would be foolish to miss out on for. The most famous city of the Muslim world, Cairo has many monuments to Islam which stand out from the crowd. Primary of them is Al-Azhar Mosque, which contains the oldest university in the world dating back over a thousand years, as well as containing a museum which shows artefacts from an ancient past. The Citadel is another unmissable location, as well as the city of the dead and Sphinx constructions which enchant all those who view them with wonderment. Of course, the pyramids are the main attraction though and all who pass through Cairo surely take the chance to view these ancient wonders. Ancient pyramids and ruins It is also possible to take a day trip from Cairo to view pyramids which are located further away, and which are much less crowded than those nearest to Cairo. These ...

Egyptian Museum Tour

The New Kingdom grows into a real imperial power, and Hatshepsut's father is the first Egyptian we know who see the river Euphrates. He instantly names the river "the flood that runs the wrong direction". Of course, a flood should run from south to north as the Nile... Hatshepsut did not expand the empire but kept the borders strong, but ThothMoses III followed the imperial tradition of his dynasty. Then suddenly, for the first time in 1500 years, a revolution breaks loose. Pharaoh Amenhotep III changes his name to EchnAton, and forbid every god apart from the sungod Aton. He destroys temples and kills priests in Waset before he moves north and establishes a new capital in middle Egypt. Apart from being a good poet (his sun hymn is very much alike the later King Solomon biblical verses) the whole art changes during his revolution. Above we can see EchnAton in a typical "El Amarna Art" style. His face is long and narrow, his shoulders narrow and the h...

The Egyptian Museum, Cairo

When the pyramid times bluntly ended with the 6th Dynasty the country went into chaos and lots of small kingdoms. The new unification came first after 130 years (around year 2050 BC) and then from the ruler of ancient Waset (Luxor). The country was once again one nation and the 11th Dynasty ruled the country from Waset. During the 11th and 12th Dynasty the country remained united for nearly 300 year and this is the period today known as the Middle Kingdom. In the 11th Dynasty Pharaoh Mentohotep builds a temple under a cliff on the west bank of Waset, the same place the famous terrace temple of Hatshepsut is built some hundred years later. The statue above is Mentohotep, and was found among the remains of his temple in Waset. In todays Lisht, close to Hwt-Ka-Ptah (Memphis near Cairo), 12 statues was found of Pharao Sensuret. The capital had been moved from Waset to Hwt-ka-Ptah when the 12th Dynasty was established. Sensuret had one of the few pyramids that were built after t...
